Welcome New Lions!
Welcome to August Orientation! This is your introduction to what life is really like at LMU. Starting August 23, you and 1350 of your closest friends will participate in a three day Orientation to get you ready for your first day of classes, your first semester, and your first year at LMU. On Friday, August 23, you can move into your residence hall, meet your roommate, eat some In-N-Out at Picnic Beneath the Palms, and meet your new o’leaders and o’group at the Orientation Welcome. Finish the night by checking out the Mane Event!
Bright and early on Saturday morning (we did say this was your introduction to college!) Day Two of Orientation begins with breakfast followed by August Orientation session. Interculturalism is an interactive session where you will learn what are community expectations for living on one of the most diverse college campuses in Southern California. Additionally, with over 80% of LMU’s campus participating in service every year and as one of the three prongs of the university mission, you can see we take service seriously here at LMU. Arrupe Service Council will introduce you to a unique off campus service program for first year students only that also provides leadership opportunities. From service to how to be a lion, the last session will be about what it means to be a lion both on and off of the bluff! Life as a Lion is a great opportunity to learn the do’s and don’ts of your first year from those who have already been there…and survived. After your morning Orientation sessions, you can meet back up with your family and enjoy the Family Festival on Sunken Garden, check out the performances at the Intercultural Welcome, attend the Celebration Mass in the Chapel, and get your dance on at the Black & White Dance party.
Day Three of Orientation begins with breakfast with the faculty of your college where you will be welcomed by your Dean. Next, you and your classmates will join President Burcham at your First Year Academic Convocation. During your Convocation, you will hear from Dr. Ronald Marasco, Professor of Theatre Arts, and from Sarah Hussein, member of the class of 2016 who submitted the winning motto for your class. Once you leave this last Orientation session, you should be ready to take on your first week, first semester, and first year at LMU! If you still have questions before the start of school on Monday, check out Schedules and Sundays at Sculpture Garden!
Welcome Weekend and August Orientation is just the start to the fun! LMU Connect is a two week-long event that kicks-off on Monday, August 26 and is one of the best opportunities to find out everything LMU has to offer outside of the classroom! LMU Connect gives you the opportunity find ways to get involved on campus and participate in LMU traditions.
After you have finished your first day of class, LMU offers a Welcome to LA Reception for out-of-state first year students to meet other individuals from their home state and learn how to make the most of their new home in Los Angeles. Afterwards, all students are invited to Open Mic Kick Off in the Living Room. If you have a talent that you want to share with your students or you just want to see how talented the students at LMU are, then this weekly program is just for you. The rest of the week continues with more exciting events. At Convo on Tuesday, make sure to kick off the school year with ASLMU’s First Convo! There will be free food, giveaways, games, entertainment and much more. Throughout the first week students will have the opportunity to check out University programs by attending open houses and programs like Just Desserts, Global Exchange, Thursday Night Thing (TNT): Tye, Thai, Tie. Also for those students who want to join a club or organization, you’re in luck! Did you know that there are 154 clubs and organizations for you to join at LMU ranging from arts to recreation and service to academic. Stop by the Club Fest Thursday during Convo hour to meet many student organizations or even learn how to create your own. We’ll also have the year’s first ASLMU Farmers Market there!
Over the long weekend, we’ll keep you busy! Which Residence Hall is going to Hall Brawls winner this year? Wear your team color and rep your team mascot on Saturday for the Hall Brawls Kick-Off! There will be flag football and tons of hall spirit! At night we’ll have regular showings at LMU’s new movie theater on campus, DejaView Movie Lounge in Huesman. You can also check out social programs like Glow presented by Sigma Phi Epsilon on Friday or toss on a cowboy hat and some boots for Lambda Chi Alpha’s Rodeo, an annual philanthropy to benefit the Drew Kurtzman Foundation. Also, on Sunday, you just hang out with the rest of the first-year class on Sunken Gardens for Day 2 of Hall Brawls: Field Day and for Fall Fest. There will be games and food right in many of your front yards.
It’s impossible for us to contain all the many and amazing things that LMU has to offer in one week, so the second week of LMU Connect offers numerous open houses. Here’s a quick peek at some of the offices who will have their doors open to you: Campus Ministry, LGBT Student Service, Greek Life, Center for Service and Action…and more throughout the week. Are you interested in going on an Alternative Break this year, being a mentor to local middle and high school students, or take part in LMUs long tradition of creating and serving sandwiches to homeless with Feed The Hungry? Check out all these service opportunities on campus and more at a Slice of Service on Tuesday! Join us on Friday for and outdoor movie, and then finish the week with Greek Life’s Lip Sync and Stroll Off!
