Exchange Visitor Program


Loyola Marymount University is designated to serve as Program Sponsor by the U.S. Department of State, thereby enabling us to issue Form DS-2019, Certificate of Eligibility, to prospective Exchange Visitors. The purpose of the J-1 Exchange Visitor Program is to increase mutual understanding between people of the United States and people of other countries by means of educational and cultural exchanges, thereby strengthening the ties between the nations. The Exchange Visitor (EV) may participate in  studies, research, teaching and receive training in EV categories under student, non-degree student, professor,  research scholar, short-term scholar, and specialist to promote international education and cultural exchange.

Loyola Marymount University undertakes substantial responsibility and liability as an official sponsor of the J-1 Exchange Visitor Program as authorized by the U.S. Department of State.  Faculty sponsors and host departments also assume considerable responsibility and liability when inviting an international scholar to participate in an LMU academic or research program. The host department must verify all requirements pertaining to the Exchange Visitor and finds this exchange an educational benefit to LMU.

Activities at LMU Length of Stay


An individual concerned primarily with teaching, lecturing, observing, or consulting. J-1 Professors may also participate in departmental research. If the Exchange Visitor will be here primarily to conduct research the Research Scholar category is more appropriate, even if the individual is a professor in his or her home country. 

 3 weeks - 5 years

Research Scholar

An individual concerned primarily with conducting research, observing, or consulting in connection with a research project. A Research Scholar is allowed to teach or lecture.

 3 weeks - 5 years

Short-term Scholar

A professor, research scholar, specialist, or a person with similar education or accomplishments coming to the United States on a short-term visit for the purpose of lecturing, observing, consulting, training, conducting research or demonstrating special skills.

 Maximum of 6 months


An individual who is an expert in a field of specialized knowledge or skill coming to the U.S.A. for observing, consulting, or demonstrating special skills.

 Maximum of 1 year

Degree Student

An individual who has been admitted to LMU to obtain a degree.

Until a degree objective is completed
Non-Degree Student An individual engaged in a prescribed academic program with a specific educational objective.  An individual who participates in LMU's Exchange Program.  Maximum 24 months
