This week, the Loyola Marymount University community remembered the life and legacy of the renowned civil rights movement leader Dr. Martin Luther King Junior. To commemorate his accomplishments, the offices of Black Student Services and Campus Ministry held a celebration and prayer breakfast in St. Robert’s Hall Auditorium.

During the event the LMU Community gathered to reflect on the vision of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. During this gathering, voices from our diverse campus community shared their thoughts and perspectives on Dr. King through prayer, reflection, spoken word, and song.

Dr. Nathan Sessoms, Director at the Office of Black Student Services, had the following to say;

“This event represents an important opportunity for the LMU Community to pause and reflect on our individual and collective roles in building and maintaining a more inclusive environment. Dr. King’s legacy is more relevant than ever. We are extremely fortunate to have his words and teachings to guide us, as we navigate life’s uncertainties.”

Martin Luther King Jr.’s efforts in achieving equality for black Americans marked a profoundly important time in American history. In championing those without a voice, MLK left our nation greater than when he found it.

The success of the civil rights movement has greatly improved institutions of higher learning by adding many new voices to academic dialogue. Loyola Marymount University prides itself on our inclusive nature and efforts.
