Loyola Marymount University Campus Recreation’s Learn-to-Swim Program provides instruction to help swimmers of all ages and abilities develop their swimming and water safety skills. It is designed to give students a positive learning experience.
Participants will establish a foundation that can be built upon as they progress through the program and the various levels. Campus Recreation offers Group (May through August), Private and Semi-private lessons for participants of all ages.
FAQs about Swim Lessons
Where do I park when I arrive for a swim lesson?
When coming for a swim lesson, we recommend that you park in any of the on-campus parking lots. Hannon, located closest to the Burns Recreation Center, is directly across from our facility. When parking on-campus, you must submit a payment at one of the kiosks located in the parking lots using your license plate number. Parking on our campus is regulated through LMU Parking services – for more information, please view the website at: www.lmu.edu/parking
What does my child need to bring to his/her swim lesson?
To ensure a smooth lesson, we recommend that your child arrive in his/her swimsuit with sunscreen already applied. We also recommend bringing a pair of goggles and a towel. *Infants must wear a water diaper or tight fitting rubber pants over their diaper. The Burns Rec Center does not have goggles or towels for purchase.
What if my child is sick and cannot make his/her group/private lesson?
For Private/Semi-Private Lessons: Cancelations must be made 24 hours ahead of time to warrant a full refund. If your child is sick, and less than 24 hours notice has been given, you must provide a valid doctor’s note to receive a refund or make-up session.
For Group Lessons: Cancelations can only be made 24 hours prior to the first lesson of the session. No refunds/make up lessons will be awarded for missed group lessons, regardless of reason.
Can my other children use the pool if they are not signed up for lesson?
During swim lesson times, the pool is strictly reserved for individuals who are enrolled in swim lessons. For this reason, it will not be permitted to have other children in the pool during another child’s swim lesson. To ensure safety at the pool we also ask that you keep a close watch of your other children around the pool deck.
Can I receive a refund?
If I have placed my child in the wrong level for group lessons can I receive a refund?
Permitting space and availability, we will move your child to the correct level group lesson. If you are seeking a full refund, however, you must cancel the group session at least 24 hours before the start of the first lesson in that session.
Can we start or continue private/semi-private lessons into the Fall?
Swim lesson packages that are purchased for the summer must be completed within that same semester. The summer session starts on May 12 and ends on August 24.
How many times a week do you suggest for lessons?
We feel the best learning takes place when lessons are three times a week, however twice a week can also work. Once a week is just too infrequent as children forget too much in between lessons. The younger the age of the child, the more lessons per week is better. Yet, if a child is a bit older (3+) and is in the pool at his home in between lessons, twice a week is ok.
How am I assigned my instructor for private or semi-private lessons?
Many of our swim instructors are students at Loyola Marymount University, so we will match you and your family with an instructor based on mutual availability. We will do our best to find consistency in scheduling to ensure the best guidance for your child.
What is the temperature of the pool?
The pool temperature is set to be between 81 and 82 degrees. During the warmer months, however, the pool may be warmer than that based on the outside temperature and solar heating that occurs.
When will my payment be processed?
For Group Lessons: Your payment will be processed when you turn in your registration form.
For Private/Semi-Private Lessons: Your payment will be processed once your instructor has been assigned to your family and a start date has been solidified.
Cancellation & Refund Policy
During normal business hours, please call the Membership Office (310) 338-1720 or the Burns Recreation Center front desk (310) 338-2912.
- Cancellations must be made 24 hours prior to the scheduled class for a full refund or credit.
- Cancellations for weekend lessons must be made by Friday at 5pm.
- Only one lesson can be rescheduled per package.
No refunds or credits will be issued if a cancellation request is placed less than 24 hours prior to the lesson. Instructors will wait 10 minutes for late arrivals. After this time, it will be counted as a "no show" and no refunds or credits will be granted. If a participant falls ill or has a medical emergency, a signed medical statement from a physician must be received in order to receive a credit.
