Loyola Marymount University and the Center for Service and Action place health and safety at the forefront of its mission. The Alternative Breaks Coordinator and staff, when considering trips, spend considerable time reviewing the safety of each location/site and any possible health concerns. Chosen sites meet high health and safety standards, but there are always certain risks in international and domestic travel that are out of our control.

Here we have provided additional information for concerned students and family pertaining to participant health and trip safety.

Health Information

It is recommended that students traveling on international trips consult a doctor regarding possible vaccinations or immunizations.

Visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for more health related information.

Loyola Marymount students can receive answers to questions as well as vaccinations or immunizations on campus.

Visit Student Health Services for more information or to schedule an appointment. Graduate students may be charged an additional fee.

Staff members should visit their physician for information.

Useful Health Resources

Passport Health LA provides detailed information on health risks, required & recommended immunizations, safety precautions and security tips for travelers. They have locations throughout Los Angeles where you can meet with medical specialists and receive immunizations.

World Health Organization is a component of the United Nations that provides information on global health and disease. There website allows you to browse by country and region so you can review issues at your destination.

Safety Information

Loyola Marymount places safety as a top priority on all of its trips. Locations are chosen only after a thorough review by both the Center for Service and Action and the University. In order to promote safety the Alternative Breaks program coordinates with several organizations.

The U.S. Department of State provides travel advisories as detail information about major cities throughout the world. The Alternative Breaks program only travels to locations deemed safe by the department.

Loyola Marymount University provides all international travelers with a card from International SOS which provides emergency services while abroad. They operate in over 70 countries and provide 24/hour support in the case of an illness or medical emergency.
