members of the service themed housing outside the CSA house

As a joint effort between the Center for Service & Action and Student Housing, Loyola Marymount University offers two housing opportunities for LMU students who are passionate for service to live with like-minded individuals on- and off-campus. The two options are listed below:

Service and Action House

The Service and Action House is located off-campus on 8001 Loyola Blvd, adjacent to the school's Loyola Boulevard entrance. House members plan community service projects and participate in a variety of social justice and community events. Past projects include making dinner for the men at Guadalupe Homeless Project in Boyle Heights, working on the Day of the Child event, and planting trees with Tree People. Programs with the LMU community include the Just Desserts program in the beginning of the school year integrating the LMU community with the House. Service-Learning Community

Service-Learning Community in Palm South Apartments is a pod-style community, with 19 students living in single and double rooms with shared living spaces (kitchen, living room, study area, etc.) and multiple bathrooms. The pod will be all-gender. The community programming will  focus on three elements:  service and action, learning  and  community:

Service and Action

During the first year, community members will commit to serve 30 hrs/semester at a community partner organization in the Los Angeles area. The second year cohort will work together to propose and implement an advocacy project.

Learning

Students will participate in a 5-module program focusing on the following topics:

  • Conceptualizing Social Justice
  • Power and Privilege
  • Conflict and Social Justice
  • Social Change Methods
  • Political Process and Policy

Community

In conjunction with the Center for Urban Resilience and the Student Housing Office, community members will use restorative practices to both build community, promote healthy relationships and resolve conflict. Functionally, this will utilize:

  • Weekly Gatherings
  • Monthly Dinners
  • One Saturday Semester Immersions

Please apply through the 2022-2023 Housing Application which opens Feb 3, 2022.
