Hailing from Nanjing, China, Haonan (Johnny) Jiang is one of the growing number of students from China who make up the largest group of international students on LMU’s campus. Many of these students share a passion for films and come to LMU to study in our highly ranked School of Film and Television.
Throughout his childhood, Johnny had a passion for the arts. His parents introduced him to the piano at the age of six, and he developed an interest in a film at an early age. When it came time to apply for college, Johnny knew LMU was the school for him. He and his parents decided early on that he should try to study in somewhere besides his home country and, unlike many of his friends’ parents, they encouraged him to pursue his interests in film and entertainment. For his application to LMU’s film school, he decided to video himself performing a popular Chinese movie theme song, employing those long-developed piano skills along with trying out his singing voice.
Currently a junior Film Production major, Johnny has continued to develop his passion for film and his skills in production, wanting to remain humble and be open to trying new things. He has enjoyed being exposed to various technical tools used in the film industry and is exploring the process of color grading films. His previous accomplishments include producing a documentary on a local Chinese musician who plays the pipa, a traditional Chinese stringed instrument, and he is now writing the script for his senior thesis.
In addition to watching many films in his free time, especially those of his favorite director, Christopher Nolan, Johnny still enjoys playing the piano, and his favorite composers are Yiruma and Frédérick Chopin. HE is an avid snowboarder and basketball fan, and is involved with several groups on campus such as Han Tao, the Chinese Cultural Club, and Delta Kappa Alpha, the professional cinematography fraternity. He was also in the first cohort of the Mateo Ricci Scholar program on campus, which connects international students from China with on campus work placements, contributing to the internationalization of LMU’s campus. Johnny has certainly made the most of his education and opportunities at LMU and plans to use all of his experiences to fully realize his dream of working in the Film industry.
