10.25.23 Halloween Safety Reminders

Dear LMU Students,

Emotions have been heightened across our global community over the last several weeks. We acknowledge the complexities around us and stress the importance of fostering compassion and support. As we near the end of October, many of you will be celebrating Halloween and Día de los Muertos, and I want to encourage you to find healthy and enjoyable ways to be in community with one another.

We continue to expect each of you to live by The Lion’s Code and abide by our community standards outlined in the Student Conduct Code. Here's some advice to help everyone celebrate safely and inclusively:

    • Costumes: Use good judgment and respect others’ cultures and beliefs. Cultural, ethnic, and religious identities are not costumes. Choosing a costume that demeans or stereotypes others can cause real harm within our community. If you choose a costume to celebrate the season, consider the feelings of others and how your choice of costume will impact others. There is no place for hatred, mockery, and bias at LMU. Costumes that offend others are never funny./li>
    • Neighborhood: If you live at or near LMU, or will be attending events in the neighborhood, be mindful that you are in a residential area. Be respectful and considerate of your neighbors by minimizing your noise level. If you host an event, you are responsible and will be held accountable for the behavior of all your guests.
    • Safety: Make smart decisions. Watch out for your friends and ask them to watch out for you. Remember all of the education you have received regarding alcohol, drugs, and consent. LMU takes all allegations of sexual and interpersonal misconduct very seriously and investigates all reported incidents. Please report all incidents of sexual and interpersonal misconduct.
    • Good Samaritan Policy: The safety and welfare of LMU students is my top priority, and I rely on all of you to take care of each other. Please do not let your own indiscretions prevent you from reporting a potentially hurtful, dangerous, or illegal situation.
