International students enrich and enliven our campus with their diversity, collective experiences and varied perspectives. Through the administration of a number of programs and services, International Students & Scholars strives to promote mutual understanding and cross-cultural exchange among international and local students.
International Student Orientation
International Student Orientation takes place every year in the week before the first day of classes. Its participants include first-year students and exchange students.
OISS makes sure that LMU's international students have everything they need to feel at home. Therefore, we invite representatives from nearby banks and cellphone companies to visit and help student open their new accounts.
In addition, we arrange a bus that takes all students to the mall to shop for their dorms and school essentials.
The orientation sessions are led by the orientation student leaders and by LMU staff. Major session include sessions on immigration, culture shock, employment, health insurance, and academics.
International students at LMU claim that their some of their favorite memories were created during international orientation. We want to make the orientations an experience that creates new friendships and fosters our communities. In past years orientation participants visited the following attractions:
- Santa Monica Pier & 3rd Street Promenade
- Venice Beach
IHOP: International House of People
In 2000, Loyola Marymount University dedicated one of its houses on Loyola Boulevard to the International Student Community to be used for housing as well as programs and events. The International House of People (IHOP) provides students of different nationalities and diverse cultures the opportunity to live and learn together in a community of mutual respect, understanding and international friendship.
The house consists of seven undergraduate students, international or domestic, with an interest in internationalizing the LMU community. Throughout the year, the House hosts various events and activities geared towards celebrating cultures and regions of the world. Those programs are planned by the IHOP residents.
Every year, IHOP becomes home to 7 students (co-ed). The House is conveniently located on 8000 Loyola Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90045. It contains 3 shared bedrooms and one single room. There are 2 bathrooms, 2 living areas, a kitchen, a patio, a backyard and a front yard.

- Maintain a minimum of 3.0 cumulative GPA
- No active judicial record
- Full participation in IHOP activities
- Ideal candidate will have a strong international awareness and openness to diverse cultures
The iMentor Program is designed to create a mutual learning opportunity for incoming undergraduate international students in their first year and current LMU students. Over summer, iMentors are assigned an iMentee that is about to become a student at LMU. The majority of their communication occurs via an email correspondence but is not limited to it.
The program provides incoming undergraduate students an opportunity to ask current LMU students questions about life as an international student. The purpose of the program is to help new students assimilate to the new setting and culture as well as build a community of diverse nationalities.
