Originally from the Inland Empire, California, Merritt earned a bachelor's degree in health science from California State University, East Bay and a master's degree in higher education and student affairs from University of San Francisco. During both her undergraduate and graduate school experiences, she was heavily involved as a student leader by participating in several student organizations.
