Hazing Prevention
At LMU, the safety, dignity, and well-being of every Lion remain at the heart of who we are. We are committed to creating an environment where all students can thrive. Your voice and actions matter. Together, we have the power to shape a culture where every Lion feels safe, included, and respected.
Hazing has no place in our LMU community. Whether in student organizations, athletic teams, performance groups, or informal gatherings, each of us shares responsibility for recognizing, reporting, and preventing harmful behavior. Living our values means actively standing up for one another and choosing leadership rooted in respect and care.
How to Report HazingLoyola Marymount University is committed to maintaining a safe and respectful campus environment where all students can participate in organizations free from hazing. This commitment applies to all student groups, including athletics, club sports, registered student organizations, and service organizations.
5Ds of Intervention
We encourage community members to know and use the 5Ds of Intervention:
Direct
Directly Intervening, in the moment and as its happening, to prevent a problem or situation from happening or becoming worse.
Delegate
Seeking help from another individual, often someone who is in authority (police officer, advisor, chapter officer, friend, university official).
Distract
Interrupting the situation without directly confronting the offender.
Delay
If you’re not able to intervene in the moment, and the problem isn’t urgent, follow up the next day to calmly share your concerns about how substance misuse is affecting them. What specific behaviors worried you?
Document
Take a screenshot if you see a concerning text or social media post and follow up.

Community Responsibility to Intervene
Any hazing activity compromises the health, welfare, and safety of all Lions. It is the responsibility of every member of the LMU community to prevent hazing from occurring or from continuing. LMU further defines hazing as a broad term encompassing actions or activities often associated with initiations or group associations which do not contribute to the positive development of a person; or which inflict or intend to cause mental, physical or emotional harm or anxieties; or which demean, degrade or disgrace any person.
LMU challenges every member of the Lion community to notice the behavior of their peers and interpret it as a problem if someone is at risk for physical/psychological harm or personal degradation. We then ask every member of the community to feel responsible to act and then intervene when/where safe to do so.
