Major: M.F.A. Screenwriting
For Trinity Jones, M.F.A. ’25, a screenwriting graduate from Ames, Iowa, choosing Loyola Marymount University was about making connections with industry professionals and fellow writers. “I chose LMU because of the in-depth screenwriting program that allowed students to have a strong portfolio and the opportunity to be close to Hollywood and the film industry for three years,” she shares.
During her time at LMU, Jones worked in Student Affairs as assistant director of LMU CARES, an experience that deeply shaped her graduate journey. The LMU community could always count on her to be assisting at Wellness Wednesday, the campus event that has meant the most to her. “No matter how stressful classes were, it was always such a comfort to know that I’d get to be at Wellness Wednesday and soak up all the good vibes,” reflected Jones.
Getting out of her comfort zone was the biggest lesson she’s learned during her time on the bluff. “I went into the program thinking I only wanted to write for children’s animation, but I went out of my comfort zone and took a comedy writing course even though I was terrified I wouldn’t be funny enough,” she said. “I discovered my love for writing comedic stories.”
This leap of faith and newfound love for comedy paved the way for her thesis screenplay. After taking that class, she decided to write a script that went on to win the LMU MFA Screenwriting Competition for Comedy Feature. “I’m really proud of creating my thesis screenplay!” Jones exclaimed.
When asked if there was a mentor who made a lasting impact, Jones immediately thinks of Anthony Rivero, interim associate director of the Office of Student Conduct and Community Responsibility. “I really struggled with the transition into graduate school, but Anthony was always there to listen to me, make me laugh and encourage me to keep going,” she said. “His encouragement helped me to be able to walk across the stage and I really appreciate him.”
If she had to sum up her LMU experience in one word, it would be transformative because, “While attending school here, I’ve found my voice both in my writing and in the way I go about my life.” She connects this experience most with the student EXP pillar Integrating Mind, Body, and Spirit, as it reflects her journey of transformation. “I feel like I was able to transform and grow into who I am today during my time at school because I came to terms with all aspects of who I am.”
After graduation, Jones is looking forward to staying at LMU while working full time in the Dean of Students office. “My time at LMU made me who I am today!”
