During spring 2019 while reviewing the Sorority & Fraternity Life Policy at Loyola Marymount University, the Sorority & Fraternity Life Office sent out an electronic review form to garner input from our constituents. One of the key items we asked for feedback for was our Chapter Status Webpage which would give prospective new members an opportunity to understand the larger picture of what is happening with the chapters on our campus.
This procedural update was reinforced in the summer of 2019 after the END ALL Hazing Act being introduced by Congresswoman Marcia Fudge (D-Ohio) and Congressman G.T. Thompson (R-PA):
"The END ALL Hazing Act seeks to prevent hazing incidents by increasing transparency and accountability for student organizations on college campuses. It would require schools to have a web page, updated twice a year, that shares information about student organizations disciplined for hazing or other misconduct that threatened the well-being of students in the last five years."
After reading responses from the policy review in the summer of 2019, the statements from the various fraternal "umbrella" organizations, and benchmarking other institutions' engagement with this type of procedure; we knew the creation of this webpage was the right step to help the following:
- Transparency within our community
- Organizational accountability
- Health and Safety of all who engage with Sororities & Fraternities at LMU
