The Mbongi Spot was created to provide more resources and opportunities for LMU’s Black community to feel a connection with their campus. African American students make up 6.8% of the LMU student population. Often these students will relate that the Black community at LMU is one of the primary reasons for attending the university. This sense of belonging and acceptance is crucial to the overall formation, development, and retention of our students. The Mbongi Spot is a centralized place in which Black students can access one another as well as resources tailored to educating their whole self. The support fueled by the space will encourage learning as well as promote service and justice, demonstrating LMU core values and principles.

The space will be accessible to the students, staff, and faculty of the LMU Black community weekdays between the hours of 9 am to 7 pm.

The Mbongi Spot is located at the Bird Nest - on the north side of campus behind the Del Rey North Residence Hall, east of the Sacred Heart Chapel.

As a response to police violence in 2020, the LMU Black community and the collective #BlackatLMU constructed a series of demands outlining community needs including administrative and financial support, as well as tangible space, specifically catered to the Black experience at LMU. LMU allocated the Bird Nest for this future use.

Programs and meetings are tailored to Student Success, Communal Engagement, and Social Justice for LMU’s Black community. While this space is open and accessible for the campus, we ask others to be respectful of the space and its’ purpose to serve the Black Community and provide a safe space for them to celebrate and stimulate culture.
