Program Sponsor

Faculty Sponsor

A faculty, who holds full professorship, and who invites J-1 participant for the purpose of promoting temporary academic activities that include teaching, lecturing, observing, conducting research or consulting at LMU/LLS.

J-1 Participant/ Exchange Visitor

A foreign national who is invited to participate in temporary academic activities that include teaching, lecturing, observing, conducting research or consulting at LMU/LLS. S/he is expected to return to his/her home country when s/he completes the objectives of a single program category. Used interchangeably with “scholar”, “exchange visitor” or "visiting scholar".

J-2 Dependent

An immediate family member of J-1 Participant, (i.e. spouse, child, etc.) who holds J-2 status.

DS-2019

Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor (J-1) Status, an official document issued by OISS for prospective Exchange Visitors.

SEVIS

Student and Exchange Visitor Information System governed by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) under Department of Homeland Security.

Visitor Categories

Professor

An individual concerned primarily with teaching, lecturing, observing, or consulting. J-1 Professors may also participate in departmental research. If the Exchange Visitor will be here primarily to conduct research the Research Scholar category is more appropriate, even if the individual is a professor in his or her home country.

Length of Stay: 3 weeks - 5 years

Research Scholar

An individual concerned primarily with conducting research, observing, or consulting in connection with a research project. A Research Scholar is allowed to teach or lecture.

Length of Stay: 3 weeks - 5 years

Short-term Scholar

A professor, research scholar, specialist, or a person with similar education or accomplishments coming to the United States on a short-term visit for the purpose of lecturing, observing, consulting, training, conducting research or demonstrating special skills.

Length of Stay: Maximum of 6 months

Specialist

An individual who is an expert in a field of specialized knowledge or skill coming to the U.S.A. for observing, consulting, or demonstrating special skills.

Length of Stay: Maximum 1 year

Degree Student

An individual who has been admitted to LMU to obtain a degree.

Length of Stay: Until Degree Objective is Completed

Non-Degree Student

An individual engaged in a prescribed academic program with a specific educational objective. An individual who participates in LMU's Exchange Program.
