Dr. Katia Chaterji is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Asian & Asian American Studies. Born and raised in Northern California, she joined LMU in 2024 because she was drawn to the university's embrace of interdisciplinarity and collaboration. Trained in history and anthropology, she encourages her students to see themselves in the making of history and culture - and to recognize knowledge production everywhere, not only in 'stuffy' archives. Her courses at LMU range from broad historical surveys of Asia to thematic topics related to gender, Islam, and environmental justice.

Katia received her B.A. in Anthropology and South Asian Studies from the University of Chicago, and her M.A. and Ph.D. in Southeast Asian History from the University of Washington. As a scholar, she engages oral history, archival, and ethnographic methodologies to study Islamic performing arts traditions in Indonesia. She is also a trained Odissi dancer and cellist, and she enjoys spending time outdoors - Toe's Beach in Playa del Rey being a family favorite. She serves as FIR in Del Rey North, where she lives with her spouse (Morgan) and their
3.5-year-old son (Kiran).
