Taryn Vander Hoop (she/her) is an Assistant Professor of Dance in the Theatre and Dance department. She is a dancer, choreographer, educator, and producer. She received a B.S. in Dance, English Literature, and Spanish from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a M.F.A. from NYU Tisch School of the Arts in Dance Performance and Choreography. She is the Co-Founder, Executive Director, and Associate Artistic Director of Summation Dance, an NYC/LA based modern dance company, called "full of energy and creativity" by The New York Times. Taryn and her company make dances that comment on current socio-political themes with an emphasis on women's rights and gender inequality.
In addition to her career in dance, Taryn leads yoga teacher trainings and retreats all over the world, most notably in Costa Rica, India, Mexico, South Korea and Vietnam. She is an E-RYT 500 certified yoga instructor and has certified hundreds of yoga teachers. She wrote her own certification curriculum in 2017 and started Lila Flow Yoga, which is recognized by the Yoga Alliance.
When she is not dancing or practicing yoga, you can find Taryn with her partner, John who works in sustainability for the World Surf League, and her two children, River (5) and Sierra (3). As a family, they are often biking, hiking, at the beach, taking photos, or on an "adventure" which could be as simple as walking the bluff. Taryn and her family believe all experiences are gifts if we can open our eyes to the wonder that surrounds us.
