Dr. Magaela Bethune (she/hers) is a community psychologist and is an assistant professor of African American Studies at Loyola Marymount University. She received both a Master of Science and PhD in Community Research and Action from Vanderbilt University. She also has a Master of Public Administration degree and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology - both from Georgia Southern University.
At LMU, her work focuses on examinations of socialization and human development at intersections of race/racism, gender, and sexual identity. She has over a decade of experience in organizational studies, program evaluation, institutional assessment and analysis.
Cross-cutting her pedagogy, orientation to research, and community engagement is her commitment to anti-racism, equity, and inclusion. In the AFAM department, Dr. Bethune teaches Intro to African American Studies; Race, Health, and Social Justice; Africana Research Methods; and Black Community Engagement.
Dr. Bethune has worked in concert with The United Methodist Church in various capacities, with emphasis on the promotion of racial and gender equity. She is co-author of an edited volume, entitled (Re)Teaching Trayvon: Education for Racial Justice and Human Freedom. She resides with her three sons in Los Angeles.
