Understanding Work Study

Work Study at LMU

All enrolled students are eligible to work on campus. There are 2 different fund types:

Work Study: a work award awarded by Financial Aid, based on the students FAFSA. Students may receive Federal Work Study from the federal government or LMU Work Study from the university. Students who do not qualify for Federal Work Study can request an LMU Work-Study award as long as the student has completed the FAFSA, regardless of grade level. The student would accept their award package, begin working, then earnings are paid to students from their work study award.

Non-Work Study: departmental or university funds used to hire students without work study funds. If you do not receive a work study award, apply to positions that do not require work study on Workday.

  • Work Study is a work - to - earn award that may have been offered in your financial aid package. This award can be used to work for LMU departments, and would be paid directly to the student. Students can review and must accept a financial aid work study award in LMU PROWL. Please visit Financial Aid for more information regarding Work Study.

Eligibility is determined by LMU's Financial Aid Office based on your FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Financial Aid (FAFSA). Recipients must be eligible under federal guidelines.

  • To earn and be paid through your work study, you must be hired in a LMU student position. You can apply to on-campus jobs to work and earn money in a job at LMU!

To get started, log into Workday using your myLMU credentials and begin your professional journey.

  • In Workday click "Careers" then "Find Student Jobs" to access LMU's Student Career Site. From here you can search for jobs and apply directly to positions. You can find and apply for available positions including on-campus departmental work and off-campus work study opportunities.

Here is a link to our Student Resources & Guides for detailed instructions on Applying to Student Jobs.

Many departments throughout the University hire students with work study funds to assist with their daily operations. Student Employment Services also offers two off-campus work study programs: the Lions for Learning Tutoring Program and the LMU Partners Program.

  • No, getting a job is optional even if you have accepted your work study. Accepting it does not mean that you need to get a job, and the decision to do so is completely up to each student.

We do recommend taking advantage of the many employment opportunities at LMU. Check out some of the Benefits of Working at LMU!

  • Yes, you can have more than one job with work study. You have the option to split your work study funds between multiple positions.

  • Once your work study has been depleted, you and your supervisor will receive a depletion notice from ses@lmu.edu

Ask your supervisor if the department has available non-work study funds and if so you may continue working in your postion. If the department does not have additional funding, you may need to stop working and the position will need to be ended immediately.

  • Yes! If you did not receive work study funds LMU still has many opportunities for student employment both on campus and off. Many departments such as RAINS Research, the School of Film and Television, Athletics, and Burns Rec (and more) hire students with non-work study funds. These positions can be found on Workday by going to the Student Career Site and applying to jobs, that do not require work study.
