What is FERPA?
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, sets forth requirements regarding the privacy of student records. FERPA governs the limited release of these records (known as education records) maintained by an educational institution and access to these records.
FERPA regulations state that while a student is in high school, parents have the right to access the student’s education record. Once a student enrolls at a post-secondary institution, those rights transfer to the student. A student’s education record at LMU includes but is not limited to, housing assignments, housing release requests, billing information, and meal plan information.
